That last is no more than a well-aired rumour, but the coinciding of these things with <a href=\"https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2025\/05\/10\/on-israel-the-tide-is-turning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>growing unease<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; on the part of Western elites who&#8217;ve so far given genocide their full blooded support &#8211; is fuelling speculation. <span id='easy-footnote-2-146189' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2025\/05\/12\/who-said-war-crime-doesnt-pay\/#easy-footnote-bottom-2-146189' title='Caitlin Johnstone&amp;#8217;s post today backs up the claim of its header, &lt;em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/caitlinjohnstone.com.au\/2025\/05\/12\/multiple-western-press-outlets-have-suddenly-pivoted-hard-against-israel\/&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot; rel=&quot;noopener&quot;&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Multiple Western Press Outlets Have Suddenly Pivoted Hard Against Israel&lt;\/strong&gt;&lt;\/a&gt;,&lt;\/em&gt; by citing four UK outlets; Financial Times, Economist, Independent and Guardian.'><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A distinction has to be drawn, however. It&#8217;s one thing to say the thin-skinned Donald is sick of a Bibi who not only brags of having US politicians in his pocket but back in 2020 irked Trump by hailing Biden as president in waiting even as the incumbent was contesting the count. Or that the West finds Israel&#8217;s excesses, and the shocking candour of its Smotrichs and Ben-Gvrs, an embarrassment it would fain be rid off of, could a &#8216;moderate&#8217; &#8211; read: <em>more quietly genocidal<\/em> &#8211; replacement only be found. Scant evidence of that but today&#8217;s New York Times ran with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/trump-disapproves-of-netanyahus-gaza-strategy-thinks-major-offensive-will-be-wasted-effort-nbc-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Trump disapproves Netanyahu&#8217;s Gaza Strategy<\/em><\/strong><\/a><em>,<\/em> Bezos&#8217;s WashPo with <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2025\/05\/12\/trump-netanyahu-middle-east-trip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Trump repeatedly bypasses Netanyahu, stoking dismay among Israelis.<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s quite another though to speculate that the sun is setting on <a href=\"https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2024\/10\/23\/us-neocons-israels-far-right-part-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>decades of close alignment<\/strong><\/a> of US deep state interests in the region with Israeli plans for a Greater Israel; that at levels deeper than any given administration in either state, financial, military and political costs of the West&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2019\/07\/09\/book-review-israel-a-beachhead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>beachhead in the Middle East<\/strong><\/a> are starting to outweigh the benefits. While the first call is easily made &#8211; yes, Trump would love to throw Bibi under a bus &#8211; it would be foolhardy to make the second.<\/p>\n<p>Especially when the only other candidates for projecting US power in the region, Riyadh and Ankara, show a worrying tendency &#8211; from Washington&#8217;s viewpoint &#8211; to hedge their bets <span id='easy-footnote-3-146189' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2025\/05\/12\/who-said-war-crime-doesnt-pay\/#easy-footnote-bottom-3-146189' title='See this Reuters piece, &lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/saudi-arabia-sits-fence-over-brics-with-eye-vital-ties-with-us-2025-05-08\/&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot; rel=&quot;noopener&quot;&gt;Saudi Arabia sits on fence over BRICS&lt;\/a&gt;&lt;\/em&gt;&lt;\/strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;, &lt;\/em&gt;and my 2023 post on Riyadh&amp;#8217;s &lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2023\/11\/27\/currency-swaps-undermine-dollar-hegemony\/&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot; rel=&quot;noopener&quot;&gt;&lt;strong&gt;currency swapline&lt;\/strong&gt;&lt;\/a&gt; with Beijing. It wouldn&amp;#8217;t do to underestimate Washington&amp;#8217;s continuing sway, but the days of it saying &lt;em&gt;&amp;#8220;jump&amp;#8221; &amp;#8211;&lt;\/em&gt; and either client state asking &lt;em&gt;&amp;#8220;how high?&amp;#8221;&lt;\/em&gt; &amp;#8211; are over.'><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> by keeping all options open in respect of that Banquo\u2019s ghost, otherwise known as the People\u2019s Republic of China, now haunting every aspect of US foreign policy.<\/p>\n<p>One source worth reading, notwithstanding a header &#8211; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/simplicius76.substack.com\/p\/the-establishment-slowly-wearies?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=1351274&amp;post_id=161349452&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=true&amp;r=8l2nl&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Establishment Slowly Wearies of Netanyahu and Israel<\/strong><\/a><\/em> &#8211; that tacitly conflates the two things I insist on separating, is Simplicus, writing just yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Another is Andrew Korybko. He always<span style=\"color: #252525;\"> irks me but his well informed and argued appraisals, on an impressive range of geopolitical hotspots, make him a go-to source. <\/span>Yes, his post yesterday &#8211; <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/trumps-rift-with-bibi-might-be-irreconcilable?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=835783&amp;post_id=163314536&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=true&amp;r=8l2nl&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump\u2019s Rift With Bibi Might Be Irreconcilable<\/a> &#8211;<\/strong><\/em> crossed the line from irritating to flat out offensive with its unconcealed dismay at the very idea:<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Israel would be left alone to deal with threats from Iran and\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/can-israel-and-turkiye-manage-their\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Turkiye<\/a><\/span>. To make matters worse, it can\u2019t be ruled out that the US might curtail or even suspend its military aid to Israel on whatever pretext, thus weakening its armed forces &#8230;<\/h6>\n<p>Yet even here the man who never lets slip an opportunity to pour the bile of the truly obsessed on an &#8220;Alt-community&#8221; he loves to belittle has an argument not easily refuted, given that other Banquo&#8217;s ghost; Israel&#8217;s nuclear status. He follows the above sick-maker with this &#8230;<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">This combination of factors could lead to Israel wildly lashing out against its regional adversaries in desperation before it loses its military-strategic advantages, which could spark a large-scale war &#8230; a zero-sum dilemma it must avoid at all costs, yet Trump\u2019s potentially irreconcilable rift with Bibi could turn this nightmare scenario into a fait accompli.<\/h6>\n<p>&#8230; but it&#8217;s hard to see the US ruling class allowing &#8220;Trump&#8217;s potentially irreconcilable rift with Bibi&#8221; to get so out of hand as to jeopardise half a century of empire building in the Middle East, unless it really did mean to cut Israel loose; a quantum leap from any currently known realities.<\/p>\n<p>Be that as it may, Alix Underwood of Common Dreams, also writing yesterday, reminds us it&#8217;s truly an ill wind which blows no one any good; that Gaza&#8217;s suffering literally pays dividends:<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Disapproval amongst Americans\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2024\/10\/01\/slight-uptick-in-americans-wanting-u-s-to-help-diplomatically-resolve-israel-hamas-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is growing<\/a><\/span>. Yet the U.S. government continues to provide Israel with billions of taxpayer dollars of military aid per year. The ultimate recipient of this aid isn\u2019t Israel; it\u2019s the U.S. defense industry. More specifically, it\u2019s the individuals who benefit from the industry\u2019s growth.<\/h6>\n<p>And while she makes\u00a0the one-sided claim that &#8230;<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">In their horrific October 7, 2023, attack, Hamas killed more than 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals and took 251 hostages. Even before this attack, many nations designated Hamas as a terrorist organization dedicated to Israel\u2019s destruction. They cite its charter and longstanding tactics of suicide bombings, indiscriminate rocket fire, and the use of human shields. <span id='easy-footnote-4-146189' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2025\/05\/12\/who-said-war-crime-doesnt-pay\/#easy-footnote-bottom-4-146189' title='While I see no need to rehash arguments made many times on this site and a thousand like it, to Ms Underwood&amp;#8217;s talk of Hamas&amp;#8217;s &lt;em&gt;&amp;#8220;suicide bombings, indiscriminate rocket fire, and use of human shields&amp;#8221;,&lt;\/em&gt; I offer Israel&amp;#8217;s Hannibal Doctrine, razing of Gaza, and an IDF HQ ringed by civilians in downtown Tel Aviv. That&amp;#8217;s before we even get to the gruesome granularity of systemic rape, denial of aid, and targeting of medics and journalists. Or to the fact Israel has thousands of hostages in the form of men, women and children jailed without charge &amp;#8211; for reasons that absolutely include use as bargaining chips in prisoner exchanges &amp;#8211; under its draconian &lt;strong&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/07\/israel-must-end-mass-incommunicado-detention-and-torture-of-palestinians-from-gaza\/&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot; rel=&quot;noopener&quot;&gt;Unlawful Combatants Act&lt;\/a&gt;&lt;\/strong&gt;.'><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>&#8230; what follows is a useful assessment of the mechanisms, including but not confined to the revolving door between America&#8217;s government and its military industrial complex, by which war crime does indeed pay.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/opinion\/meet-the-people-profiting-from-us-military-aid-to-israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet the People Profiting from US Military Aid to Israel<\/a><\/h3>\n<h5 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">A genocide backed by economic interests is a big problem involving powerful actors. However, many people are taking action to affect the status quo.<\/span><\/h5>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Six months ago, a United Nations Special Committee found that Israel\u2019s warfare methods in\u00a0Gaza\u00a0were\u00a0consistent with genocide. The UN\u00a0defines genocide\u00a0as \u201cacts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group.\u201d The Special Committee pointed to the fact that\u00a0Israel\u00a0had<\/span>\u00a0<strong><a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/45739\/environmental_impact_conflict_Gaza.pdf?sequence=3&amp;isAllowed=y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dropped over 25,000 tonnes of explosives<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u2014equivalent to two nuclear bombs\u2014on Gaza in just four months<\/span>.\u00a0<strong><a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2025\/05\/1162806\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Interference with humanitarian aid<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">, leading to starvation, was another atrocity. The Committee stated, \u201cBy destroying vital water, sanitation, and food systems, and contaminating the environment, Israel has created a lethal mix of crises that will inflict severe harm on generations to come.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Disapproval amongst Americans<\/span>\u00a0<strong><a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2024\/10\/01\/slight-uptick-in-americans-wanting-u-s-to-help-diplomatically-resolve-israel-hamas-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is growing<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">. Lobbying and campaign contributions help ensure that their profits increase.
