{"id":152742,"date":"2025-08-24T08:32:45","date_gmt":"2025-08-24T07:32:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/?p=152742"},"modified":"2025-08-27T16:07:58","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T15:07:58","slug":"meditations-on-a-sinking-ship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2025\/08\/24\/meditations-on-a-sinking-ship\/","title":{"rendered":"Meditations on a sinking ship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday in the first twenty-five of seventy minutes with an interviewer unnamed and unknown to me, John Mearsheimer demonstrated both the astuteness and gravitas which keep me tuning in, and the limits to the &#8220;Offensive Realism&#8221; school of which the Chicago based professor is the world&#8217;s leading exponent.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Trump Abandons Kiev: Europe Bears the War Alone | Prof. John Mearsheimer\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NFpMHaWsRfQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>On the credit side, he opens with a categoric statement &#8211; long obvious to anyone paying close attention and not confining their sources to corporate media <a href=\"https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2021\/05\/07\/britain-decides\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>systemically incapable<\/strong><\/a> of being fully truthful on such a matter &#8211; that there can be no negotiated end to America&#8217;s proxy war on Russia since the positions of Moscow and Kiev are radically irreconcilable. That this is not more widely recognised I put down to our having been <a href=\"https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2025\/03\/16\/a-ukraine-timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>lied to for years<\/strong><\/a> on both the war&#8217;s causes and its progress.<\/p>\n<p>Still on the credit side, that nameless interlocutor plays devil&#8217;s advocate to ask why those who say Russia&#8217;s demands are reasonable should not be derided as Appeasers whose concessions &#8211; like Chamberlain&#8217;s in Munich &#8217;38 &#8211; would simply feed the monster that is Putin. We all know the script. Donbas today. Kiev next week. Berlin, Paris and London by Xmas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-81639\" src=\"https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/putin-trashed-in-media.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"787\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/putin-trashed-in-media.jpg 787w, https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/putin-trashed-in-media-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/putin-trashed-in-media-768x527.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 787px) 100vw, 787px\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: right; padding-left: 45px;\">When corporate media speak with one voice, either all speak truth or <a href=\"https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2022\/01\/23\/monolithic-control-at-the-guardian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">all serve power on matters crucial to its interests<\/span><\/a>. In this case hard facts rule out the former but, for a species of storytellers, well funded narratives beat truth hands down.<\/h6>\n<p>The professor&#8217;s three point rebuttal, between 19:52 and 24:50, is masterly. One, Russia lacks the capability to overpower Europe. Two, there&#8217;s zero evidence that Russia wants to. Three (actually an extension of one) after forty-two months of fighting, Russia &#8211; though close to the end game &#8211; has not even secured the Donbas.<\/p>\n<p>All three are foreshadowed in my post of a month ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2025\/07\/24\/the-road-to-ww3-capturing-minds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Road to WW3. Part 3: capturing minds<\/strong><\/a>, and more specifically in political economist Michael Hudson&#8217;s observations that <em>&#8220;the world is at a point at which no industrial economy has the manpower and political ability to mobilize a standing army of the size needed to invade or even wage a major battle with a significant adversary&#8221;<\/em>, <span id='easy-footnote-1-152742' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2025\/08\/24\/meditations-on-a-sinking-ship\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-152742' title='In yesterday&amp;#8217;s interview the professor points out that when, on September 1st 1939, Hitler invaded Poland (a smaller country than Ukraine) he committed 1.5 million troops. Russia&amp;#8217;s SMO began with 100,000 and even now, forty-two months on, Western sources put the numbers at below 700,000.'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and that Russia and China <em>&#8220;have far more to gain by offering mutual economic benefits to the West&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The idea that Putin has Hitlerian designs on Europe is, of course, widely accepted by a credulati who&#8217;d already bought the lie that Russia&#8217;s SMO was a land grab when in truth it was a refusal to accept, on its 2,295 km border with Ukraine, a situation the USA would never accept on its own border.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-84051\" src=\"https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/nato-map-compared.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"951\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/nato-map-compared.jpg 951w, https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/nato-map-compared-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/nato-map-compared-768x375.jpg 768w, https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/nato-map-compared-940x459.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 951px) 100vw, 951px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So what now, as our media pick over the bones of the <a href=\"https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2025\/08\/16\/baked-alaska\/\"><strong>Alaska summit<\/strong><\/a>, and that sideshow three days later when Zelensky came to Washington escorted by Europe&#8217;s Comic Strip Team? What now is that Ukraine is finished as a nation in any meaningful sense of the word, <span id='easy-footnote-2-152742' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2025\/08\/24\/meditations-on-a-sinking-ship\/#easy-footnote-bottom-2-152742' title='For a mercilessly entertaining assessment of Europe&amp;#8217;s and Kiev&amp;#8217;s folly see &lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/youtu.be\/-H1oQXRAqgI&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot; rel=&quot;noopener&quot;&gt;&lt;strong&gt;yesterday&amp;#8217;s dialogue&lt;\/strong&gt;&lt;\/a&gt; between Nima Alkhorshid and Dmitry Orlov. Like John Mearsheimer though for different reasons, Dimitry overstates the scale of disaster for the US &amp;#8211; there&amp;#8217;s &lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/us\/news-today\/article\/ex-cia-chief-we-gave-ukraine-enough-weapons-to-bleed-not-to-win-r3q0r2fcg&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot; rel=&quot;noopener&quot;&gt;&lt;strong&gt;credible evidence&lt;\/strong&gt;&lt;\/a&gt; the Washington planners never thought Ukraine could win: that was just the sales talk &amp;#8211; and like John understates the division of labour now underway; with Europe selling &amp;#8216;austerity&amp;#8217; to its peoples while taking on the costs of tying down Russia in Ukraine to free up the US to continue encircling its main adversary, China. More damning than either, the beard he&amp;#8217;s recently sprouted is ridiculous &lt;em&gt;but&lt;\/em&gt; &amp;#8211; also like John &amp;#8211; he gets a good deal right, and delivers it in his trademark tongue-in style. For we who like our takedowns served with stiletto wit and free of ruth, Dmitry never fails.'><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> torched on the altar of preserving US unipolarity by tying down the Russian Federation in an exhausting war as advocated in the 2019 Rand Report, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/research_reports\/RR3063.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Extending Russia<\/strong><\/a>. <\/em><span id='easy-footnote-3-152742' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2025\/08\/24\/meditations-on-a-sinking-ship\/#easy-footnote-bottom-3-152742' title='So infamous has its 2019 report on Russia become that the Rand website now prefaces it with a disclaimer that &lt;em&gt;&amp;#8220;Russian entities and individuals sympathetic to Putin&amp;#8217;s decision to invade Ukraine have mischaracterized this research&amp;#8221;.&lt;\/em&gt; But facts are stubborn things. Catalysts for implosion seldom come more powerful than Europe&#8217;s betrayal by leaders groomed in Washington<\/h6>\n<p>This brings me to the limitations of Offensive Realism. Yes, John brings much needed <em>realpolitik\u00a0<\/em> to bear on events and processes routinely mis-sold as battles between Good and Evil. For that we should be thankful and, more important, continue to consult him as an invaluable source in a tsunami of spin all the more engulfing for the fact its purveyors likely buy it themselves. But John&#8217;s blindness to empire leaves him incapable of seeing that Ukraine was never a mistake on Washington&#8217;s part. Beneath the theatrics and off-the-cuff chaos of a Trump, the vicious senility of a Biden and arrogant meddling of an Obama can be seen &#8211; if we only look &#8211; a continuity of deep state agendas serving the true masters of a sinking ship.<\/p>\n<p>Which in turn brings me to Bangkok based Brian Berletic, guesting with the equally impressive KJ Noh on Danny Haiphong&#8217;s channel in a thirty minute discussion two days ago.
