I’ve been assured, by a courageous and genuinely big-hearted friend who’d cultivated a few dissident Syrians in the UK, that a nation of 17 million people was “mightily sick” of “mansplainers” like me … by another that Ukrainians and Russians alike loathe Vladimir Putin … and by a third that media accounts of a “Xinjiang genocide” now thoroughly discredited had been corroborated by a handful of Uighurs met on her travels.

All three are highly intelligent and expensively educated. One is an academic with a doctorate in social science who can be assumed well versed in epistemology, research methodology and the pitfalls for the unwary of generalising from small and atypical samples. I’ve recently, i.e. belatedly, grown wary of the wishful thinking of many anti-imperialists – yours truly not excepted – who consult only the sources which tell us what we want to hear. The fall of Syria was salutary, since voices I’d hitherto heeded and featured in my own writings had voiced inside-track confidence that no such thing could happen. These weren’t charlatans but folk with their hearts in the right place. Amid the fog of war, egg on the face is a risk we take when having the balls to raise head above parapet. I’m less forgiving, however, of those who make no public acknowledgement of their errors, and carry on carrying on as if they’d never made a wrong call in all their puff.

(They serve as mirror opposites to the pundits – not only ‘universalist’ liberals like George Monbiot but most of the far Left – who, having vilified Bashar al-Assad and his Damascus ‘regime’, have fallen weirdly silent on what has happened to that rape scene of a country since December 2024.)

*

On June 19 I posted part 1 of a series – US control of global energy? – whose subsequent posts I’ve yet to pen. It features an essay in which Nel Bonilla cautions against the twin errors for anti-imperialists on the one hand of despairingly assuming an empire run by a cabal both omnipotent and infallible; on the other of taking each and every setback for that empire – with the war it launched on February 28 as big a setback as they come – to be Writing On The Wall.

Though there are differences between Nel Bonilla and Brian Berletic, there is common ground too. What I see in those – Nel’s second group – who underestimate empire’s capacity to learn and adjust is a focus on one or two squares of a geopolitical chessboard to the exclusion of the many others. As it happens Brian’s frequent use of chessboard analogies, to place the seizing or forfeiture of pawns or even rooks and bishops in the context of a longer game, can be likened to Nel’s reminder – her analogy is urban planning – that:

… empires, like city governments, do not surrender when a policy fails. They evaluate, they consult their stakeholders, they conduct studies, and they adapt.
