The insurance and pharmaceutical industries that run the healthcare system for profit instead of health are omnipotent. The intelligence agencies that carry out wholesale surveillance of the public are omnipotent. The courts that reinterpret laws to excuse corporate crimes are omnipotent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Politics is spectacle, a tawdry carnival act where a constant jockeying for power by the ruling class dominates the news cycles, as if politics were a race to the Superbowl. The real business of ruling is hidden, carried out by corporate lobbyists who write the legislation, banks that loot the Treasury, the war industry and an oligarchy that determines who gets elected and who does not. It is impossible to vote against the interests of Goldman Sachs, the fossil fuel industry or Raytheon, no matter which party is in office.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>Chris Hedges<\/strong> (below)<\/h6>\n<p>Recovering from Covid, I still intend to assemble my thoughts into a review of his latest book \u2013<em>The Destiny of Civilisation: Finance Capitalism, Industrial Capitalism or Socialism \u2013\u00a0<\/em>for Part 3 of my answer to the question,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2022\/08\/13\/why-read-michael-hudson-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2022\/08\/13\/why-read-michael-hudson-part-1\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1662729100180000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1DmgItv_CkcqkYc3wUeWUq\"><strong>Why read Michael Hudson?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>I mention this since that book shows how rentier elites who rule the Western world have captured not only government but media (mainstream and social) and economic orthodoxy to so tighten their grip on hearts and minds that we accept as inevitable and even desirable a status quo \u2013 economic insecurity at home &#8230; illegal wars <span id='easy-footnote-1-90243' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2022\/09\/08\/democracy-is-so-not-coming-to-the-usa\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-90243' title='I mean the wars on Iraq and Libya, and looting of Syrian oil &amp;#8211; all premised on industrial scale lying, and all crossing the threshold which saw the Nuremberg defendants hanged for the &amp;#8220;supreme war crime&amp;#8221; of &amp;#8220;waging aggressive war&amp;#8221;. I mean starvation sanctions on peoples whose leaders disobey and\/or obstruct the imperial will: witness Iran&amp;#8217;s suffering and the freezing of Venezuela&amp;#8217;s gold by America&amp;#8217;s UK vassal (Washington and Wall St. having anointed Juan Guaid\u00f3 as that country&amp;#8217;s leader). I mean the hair-raisingly reckless expansion of a hostile alliance to Russia&amp;#8217;s doorstep &amp;#8211; a thing Washington would not for a moment tolerate within a thousand miles of America&amp;#8217;s borders &amp;#8211; and imperial sabre rattling in the South China Sea. And I haven&amp;#8217;t even got started on that &lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2019\/07\/09\/book-review-israel-a-beachhead\/&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot; rel=&quot;noopener&quot;&gt;&lt;strong&gt;beachhead in the middle east&lt;\/strong&gt;&lt;\/a&gt;, apartheid Israel &amp;#8230;'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> in far off lands that pose no threat to you or me &#8230; ongoing prioritising of private profits over environmental sanity \u2013 which serves the few at the expense of the many.<\/p>\n<p>(Not that it\u2019s all doom and gloom. In China\u2019s rise to challenge US unipolarity, Professor Hudson finds the potential for a fairer and more sustainable world. No guarantees mind, when (a) China may lose control of its industrial capitalists, and let go of its tight rein on the sectors \u2013 led by banking but also state provision of education, health and others whose public ownership in the West is either a thing of the past or fast heading that way \u2013 and (b) what the elites in a US led West stand to lose from a less toxic world should be giving us all sleepless nights over how far they will go to maintain so profitable a status quo, when the history of this century alone offers the coldest of comforts on the question. <span id='easy-footnote-2-90243' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2022\/09\/08\/democracy-is-so-not-coming-to-the-usa\/#easy-footnote-bottom-2-90243' title='Because few in the West have grasped the nature of modern imperialism, and the extent to which &lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/f\/fire-economy.asp#:~:text=FIRE%20refers%20to%20a%20sector%20of%20the%20economy,brokerages%2C%20real%20estate%20agencies%2C%20hedge%20funds%2C%20and%20more.&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot; rel=&quot;noopener&quot;&gt;&lt;strong&gt;FIRE sectors&lt;\/strong&gt;&lt;\/a&gt; exert a pythonesque grip on the imperial centre, there is an eerie deficiency in popular understandings of how and why a dangerously financialised West, its manufacturing long outsourced to the global south, is threatened by the rise of China. Hence the wall to wall media demonising of China and, for overlapping reasons, a Putin led Russia.'><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> )<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile two days ago on MintPress, Chris Hedges was writing with customary eloquence and insight on the state of his own country, the self-avowed leader of the free world.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Let&#8217;s Stop Pretending America is a Democracy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">There is a fatal disconnect between a political system that promises democratic equality and freedom while carrying out socioeconomic injustices that result in grotesque income inequality and political stagnation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Decades in the making, this disconnect has extinguished American democracy. The steady stripping away of economic and political power was ignored by a hyperventilating press that thundered against the barbarians at the gate \u2014 Osama bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, the Taliban, ISIS, Vladimir Putin \u2014 while ignoring the barbarians in our midst. The slow-motion coup is over. Corporations and the billionaire class have won. There are no institutions, including the press, an electoral system that is little more than legalized bribery, the imperial presidency, the courts or the penal system, that can be defined as democratic. Only the fiction of democracy remains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The political philosopher\u00a0Sheldon Wolin\u00a0in<\/span>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/press.princeton.edu\/books\/paperback\/9780691178486\/democracy-incorporated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Democracy Incorporated: Managed Democracy and the Specter of Inverted Totalitarianism<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\">calls our system \u201cinverted totalitarianism.\u201d The fa\u00e7ade of democratic institutions and the rhetoric, symbols and iconography of state power have not changed. The Constitution remains a sacred document. The U.S. continues to posit itself as a champion of opportunity, freedom, human rights and civil liberties, even as half the country struggles at subsistence level, militarized police gun down and imprison the poor with impunity, and the primary business of the state is war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">This collective self-delusion masks who we have become \u2014 a nation where the citizenry has been stripped of economic and political power and where the brutal militarism we practice overseas is practiced at home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">In classical totalitarian regimes, such as Nazi Germany or Stalin\u2019s Soviet Union, economics was subordinate to politics. <span id='easy-footnote-3-90243' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/steelcityscribblings.uk\/wp\/2022\/09\/08\/democracy-is-so-not-coming-to-the-usa\/#easy-footnote-bottom-3-90243' title='&lt;em&gt;&amp;#8220;In &amp;#8230; Nazi Germany or Stalin\u2019s Soviet Union, economics was subordinate to politics &amp;#8230;&amp;#8221;&lt;\/em&gt;\u00a0 This is a questionable claim which speaks to me of a superficial grasp of what happened and why in both cases. The rise of Hitler, as of Stalin, was heavily influenced by economic circumstance. As were their subsequent trajectories as leaders.'><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> But under inverted totalitarianism, the reverse is true. There is no attempt, unlike fascism and state socialism, to address the needs of the poor. Rather, the poorer and more vulnerable you are, the more you are exploited, thrust into a hellish debt peonage from which there is no escape. Social services, from education to health care, are anemic, nonexistent or privatized to gouge the impoverished. Further<\/span>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/aug\/10\/us-inflation-rate-july-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ravaged<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">by 8.5 percent inflation, wages have\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/americas-slow-motion-wage-crisis-four-decades-of-slow-and-unequal-growth-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decelerated<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">sharply since 1979. Jobs often do not offer benefits or security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">In my book<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GeE5WnTUsF8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">America: The Farewell Tour<\/a><span style=\"color: #800000;\">,<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> I examined the social indicators of a nation in serious trouble. Life expectancy in the U.S. fell in 2021, for the second year in a row. There have been over 300 mass shootings this year. Close to a million people have died from drug overdoses since 1999. There are\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/chapterland.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/11\/US_FactsFigures_Flyer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an average<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">of 132 suicides every day. Nearly 42 percent of the country<\/span>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/obesity\/data\/adult.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is classified<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\">as obese, with one in 11 adults\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/health-statistics\/overweight-obesity#:~:text=including%20severe%20obesity).-,About%201%20in%2011%20adults%20(9.2%25)%20have%20severe%20obesity,have%20severe%20obesity%20(6.9%25).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">considered<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">severely obese.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">These diseases of despair are rooted in the disconnect between a society\u2019s expectations of a better future and the reality of a system that does not provide a meaningful place for its citizens. Loss of a sustainable income and social stagnation causes more than financial distress. As \u00c9mile Durkheim points out in<\/span>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/The-Division-of-Labor-in-Society\/Emile-Durkheim\/9781476749730\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Division of Labor in Society<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/The-Division-of-Labor-in-Society\/Emile-Durkheim\/9781476749730\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">,<\/a>\u00a0it severs the social bonds that give us meaning. A decline in status and power, an inability to advance, a lack of education and adequate health care, and a loss of hope result in crippling forms of humiliation. This humiliation fuels loneliness, frustration, anger and feelings of worthlessness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">In<\/span>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hitler-Germans-Collected-Works-Voegelin\/dp\/0826214665\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hitler and the Germans<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">, the political philosopher<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\">Eric Voegelin\u00a0dismisses the idea that Hitler \u2014 gifted in oratory and political opportunism but poorly educated and vulgar \u2014 mesmerized and seduced the German people. The Germans, he writes, supported Hitler and the \u201cgrotesque, marginal figures\u201d surrounding him because he embodied the pathologies of a diseased society, one beset by economic collapse and hopelessness. Voegelin defines stupidity as a \u201closs of reality.\u201d The loss of reality means a \u201cstupid\u201d person cannot \u201crightly orient his action in the world, in which he lives.\u201d The demagogue, who is always an\u00a0<em>idiote<\/em>, is not a freak or social mutation. The demagogue expresses the society\u2019s zeitgeist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The acceleration of deindustrialization by the 1970s, as I write in<\/span>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/America-The-Farewell-Tour\/Chris-Hedges\/9781501152689\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">America, The Farewell Tour<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/America-The-Farewell-Tour\/Chris-Hedges\/9781501152689\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">,<\/a>\u00a0created a crisis that forced the ruling elites to devise a new political paradigm, as Stuart<\/span> <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Hall explains in<\/span>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sociologytwynham.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/policing-the-crisis.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Policing the Crisis<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/sociologytwynham.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/policing-the-crisis.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">.<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\">Trumpeted by a compliant media, this paradigm shifted its focus from the common good to race, crime and law and order.\u00a0 It told those undergoing profound economic and political change that their suffering stemmed not from rampant militarism and corporate greed but from a threat to national integrity. The old consensus that buttressed New Deal programs and the welfare state was attacked as enabling criminal Black youth, \u201cwelfare queens\u201d and other alleged social parasites. This opened the door to a\u00a0<em>faux<\/em>\u00a0populism, begun by Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, which supposedly championed family values, traditional morality, individual autonomy, law and order, the Christian faith and the return to a mythical past, at least for white Americans. The Democratic Party, especially under Bill Clinton, moved steadily to the right until it became largely indistinguishable from the establishment Republican Party to which it is now allied. Donald Trump, and the 74 million people who voted for him in 2020, were the result.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">It will do no good, as\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/01\/us\/politics\/biden-speech-transcript.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biden did<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\">on Thursday in Philadelphia, to demonize Trump and his supporters in the way they demonize Biden and the Democrats. Biden, raising clenched fists, backlit by Stygian red lights and flanked by two U.S. Marines in dress uniforms, announced from his Dantesque stage set that \u201cDonald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our Republic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Donald Trump called the speech the most \u201cvicious, hateful and divisive speech ever delivered by an American president\u201d and attacked Biden as \u201can enemy of the state.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Biden\u2019s frontal assault widens the divide. It solidifies a system where voters do not vote for what they want, since neither side delivers anything of substance, but against what they despise. Biden did not address our socioeconomic crisis or offer solutions. It was political theater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Anti-politics masquerades as politics. No sooner does one money-drenched election cycle end, the next one begins, perpetuating what<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\">Wolin calls<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201c<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/views\/2015\/11\/02\/sheldon-wolin-and-inverted-totalitarianism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">politics without politics<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201d.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #800000;\">These elections do not permit citizens to participate in power. The public is allowed to voice opinions to scripted questions, which are repackaged by publicists, pollsters, political consultants and advertisers and fed back to them. Few races,<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/analysis-opinion\/gerrymandering-competitive-districts-near-extinction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including only<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\">14 percent of congres\u00adsional districts, are considered competitive. Politicians do not campaign on substantial issues but on skillfully manufactured political personalities and emotionally charged culture wars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The militarists, who have created a state within a state and who plunge us into one military debacle after another, consuming half of all discretionary spending, are omnipotent. The corporations and billionaires, which orchestrated a virtual tax boycott and gutted regulation and oversight, are omnipotent. The industrialists who wrote trade deals to profit from unemployment and underemployment of U.S. workers and\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0IgWeP7ngSo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sweatshop labor overseas<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">are omnipotent. The insurance and pharmaceutical industries that run the healthcare system, whose primary concern is profit not health and who are<\/span>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-51235105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responsible for<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\">16 percent of the worldwide reported deaths from COVID-19 although we are less than 5 percent of the global population, are omnipotent. The intelligence agencies that carry out wholesale surveillance of the public are omnipotent. The courts that reinterpret laws to strip them of their original meaning to ensure corporate control and excuse corporate crimes, are omnipotent. The courts gave us Citizens United, for example,\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/research-reports\/citizens-united-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which permits<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\">unlimited corporate financing of elections by claiming it upholds the right to petition the government and is a form of free speech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Politics is spectacle, a tawdry carnival act where the constant jockeying for power by the ruling class dominates the news cycles, as if politics were a race to the Superbowl. Bush, Barack Obama and Joe Biden. But they worked closely with Donald Trump and are willing to do so again. What they will not allow are reformers such as Bernie Sanders, who might challenge, however tepidly, their obscene accumulation of wealth and power. This inability to reform, to restore democratic participation and address social inequality, means the inevitable death of the republic.
