After 19 months of war crimes, The Independent says it’s “time to speak up”

On October 9 2023, two days after Hamas broke out of what a former chief of Israel’s National Security Council had nineteen years earlier called the world’s largest concentration camp, the Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant told the world of his government’s intent:

We are fighting human animals and we act accordingly. We are imposing a complete siege on Gaza. There will be no electricity, no food, no water, no fuel. Everything will be closed.

That government has since done exactly as advertised, while bombing Gaza into the stone age (schools and hospitals not spared) and targeting children, medics, aid workers and journalists. Israel’s professional apologists and useful idiots aside, no one disputes that tens of thousands – some, like prestigious medical journal, The Lancet, say hundreds of thousands – have been slaughtered. As Gazans die from bunker-busters supplied by the US and missiles guided by UK intelligence flights out of Cyprus, or from malnutrition and easily preventable diseases – and as children undergo amputations without anaesthetic – IDF thugs in uniform post jubilant proof of their crimes on social media.

Millions of ordinary Westerners, appalled by their own governments’ complicity, took Gallant at his word, trusted the evidence of their eyes and ears in the world’s first live-streamed genocide, and from the outset hit the streets in protest …

… but it took Western media a little longer to catch up. Now, after 19 months spent gaslighting their audiences with talk of Israel’s “right to self defence”, equating of anti-Zionism with anti-semitism and muddying of waters with both-sides-ism, those media are changing their tune.

A case in point being Britain’s Independent  newspaper, which discovered six days ago that “it’s time to speak up” …

Here’s Owen Jones, responding to his former employer’s Damascene conversion:
