A loo with a view

6 May

Taken today, looking north towards the steel city from Meersbrook Park …

… while yesterday I rode the escalator to the first floor of Atkinsons, a recent refurbishment of whose gents offers an eye-catching floor to ceiling photo-tryptich of the peak district.

In this the sole remaining independent department store of a city whose main attraction is the vast national park ringing it north, south and west, I call the choice inspired. The Peak District National Park, earliest of fifteen such areas of outstanding beauty, is surely the most tangible outcome of one of Britain’s more successful acts of mass civil disobedience.

Today though I speak of laws none may disobey.

Outdoor lovers of every stripe know what it is to answer the call of nature with naught but tree, boulder or dry stone wall to shield those body parts less viewed from the gaze of sheep farmer and passing rambler, but this Atkinsons loo makeover takes al fresco relief to the next level.

I mention such things in pi passing. I hadn’t made the ascent purely for the view, had I?

  1. Being female and therefore not having the physical equipment to use a urinal might you be in danger of peeing on your boots whilst admiring the murals?

    • I heard but can’t confirm that the floor of each cubicle in the ladies has its own segment of Ladybower Reservoir.
