Here’s my favourite oak in the whole wide world, a tree for all seasons. I’ve photographed it in snow and shine, with friends in the frame or majestically alone.

When two idiots took a chainsaw to the eponymous tree at Sycamore Gap, snapped here while I walked Hadrian’s Wall ten years ago …

… I’d thought the sentences handed down draconian – but if anyone did that here I’d demand life without parole.
