Britain’s, The Telegraph, October 26, 2024
After finishing my four-parter on US Neocons & Israel’s far Right, all written in the context of Israel’s unusually delayed response to October 1st, I’d aimed to spend today gathering material on a BRICS 2024 summit to which Western media have so far responded with sly put-down (The Guardian) snarls of rage (The Telegraph) or by ignoring it altogether as if so significant an event, and the irreversible shift in the global order it speaks to, could simply be wished away.
The words, ostrich, danger, head and sand spring to mind.
Then came this morning’s news. I’ve done a little reading, a little viewing, and will be doing more of both. Meanwhile, shining out like a gem in a muddy ditch at dusk, is a Brian Berletic offering on his Bangkok based New Atlas channel. Always crisply lucid, always drawing on a wide range of source material, this morning’s post does not disappoint.
For some thirty-three of its forty-four minutes Brian assesses the token nature of the strike – which, unlike the token nature of Iran’s on October 1st, displayed no Israeli capabilities not already known – and the difficulties Israel would face, even with direct US involvement, in a more serious attack. All in the context of a regional power balance shifting as surely as the global order changes signified by the BRICS summit.
The last eleven minutes note that shift as it manifests itself in Israel’s decision, borne of desperation, to bring the war into Lebanon.
