Film Review: Manchester by the Sea

21 Jan

Masterful non linear story telling with bursts of off-the-wall naturalism reminiscent of the Coen brothers …

… add in sardonic wit, piercing pathos, a touch of slapstick and scenes of poignantly silent estrangement …

… and the result, once we factor in conviction performances as sparks fly in the interplay between uncle/guardian Casey Affleck and testosteroned nephew Lucas Hedges – with a sterling cast, wintry Massachusetts harbours, New England clapperboard and soundtrack skilfully woven – is a film of flat out brilliance you don’t even want to think about missing.
